During the Lord's supper, Jesus took bread, gave thanks, broke it and gave it to His disciples saying, "this is My body given up for you, do this in remembrance of Me." Likewise He took the cup saying, "this cup is the new covenant in my blood" Luke 22:19-20. The communion symbolizes the blood covenant between us and God.
